South African Sports Minister visits
Tuesday, 05 June 2001.
South African Minister for Sport and Recreation, Mr Ncgonde Balfour, has visited The Football Association as part of a busy programme of meetings with various sports governing bodies.
Mr Balfour is one of eight ministers accompanying President Thabo Mbeki on a three-day State Visit to the UK. He met with F.A.Chairman, Geoff Thompson, and F.A. Vice President Frank Pattison as well as members of The F.A.'s International Relations Team to discuss a number of issues, notably grass roots football development, the international football calendar and South Africa's intention to bid for the 2010 World Cup. The subject of stadium safety was also raised - a matter which has once again been brought into the public domain following the tragic events at Ellis Park in April when 43 fans died.
Mr Balfour said:
"We wish to thank The Football Association for extending the hand of friendship to SAFA and for all the work you have been doing with them to assist the development of our game. We are particularly grateful for your support in the difficult times since the Ellis Park tragedy".
