McClaren backs campaign
Thursday, 19 October 2006.
England Head Coach Steve McClaren is getting behind the message ‘One Game, One Community’ for the next fortnight as the power of football brings communities together.
The message, backed by the Football Association, is part of the Kick It Out week of action that will see the biggest names in football join with fans, clubs, schools and communities across the country from now until 30 October.
McClaren said: "The FA and the England team are big supporters of the Kick It Out campaign and will be wholeheartedly behind the week of action.
"The 'One Game, One Community' theme for the week encompasses everything the England team stands for. The work going on at community level is essential and should be celebrated in this way."
During the period hundreds of activities will highlight the role football plays in promoting equality and will celebrate the contribution made to the game by all communities, of all races, cultures and religions across the country.
Highlights of the week of action will include:
All 92 professional clubs celebrating the power football has in bringing communities together at a home game over the two weekends.
Leading players giving their views on the importance of football to communities and on racism in the game.
More than 700 Community events taking place across the UK.
Exhibitions, competitions and youth activities exploring the diversity of football at libraries, schools and in community centres.
The week of action also falls within Black History Month and will coincide with Diwali, Ramadan and Jewish Festivals enabling opportunities to celebrate these important periods.
Lord Herman Ouseley, Kick It Out Chair, today commented: "More than two million people will join hands during the week of action under the banner, ‘One Game, One Community’.
"The period will highlight football’s popularity amongst communities stretching from the length and breadth of the country and celebrate the power the game has in bringing different people together.
"We hope this show of unity will illustrate how football can lead the way in promoting inclusion and celebrating diversity."
