The White Hart Lane club advertised a new Hotline number (07766 553 225) in their programme for people to report any instances of abuse and a club spokesman said that it is a reminder to fans of their stance. “We are fully aware of the spate of homophobic songs and chants that have been creeping into the game lately.

“It is something we’ve spoken to The FA Premier League about and we hope this lead will be followed by other clubs. We are totally behind The FA’s Football For All campaign and everything it stands for. The piece in our programme about offensive chanting just underlines our zero tolerance on such matters.”

The programme article reminded spectators that offensive chanting is not an acceptable part of the match day experience at the club.

“We are committed to tackling all forms of discrimination or harassment, whether it concerns race, religion or sexual orientation,” it said.

The initiative has received the full backing of The FA and the government. Sports Minister, Richard Caborn, complimented Spurs on taking such a positive step.

“It sends a significant message to fans that abusive chants on race, colour, creed or sexuality will not be tolerated. My message to the fans is: Be supportive not abusive.”

The FA’s Equality Manager, Lucy Faulkner, says that Tottenham’s campaign is to be applauded. “The FA’s opposition to abuse of any kind has been set out very clearly for some time now. Discrimination of any kind is punishable with sanctions which include abusive players and fans being barred from the game.

“In the near future, our aim is to work with the Premier League and Football League to make the necessary changes to their ground regulations so that homophobic chanting is included on the list of ejectable offences from stadia.”

“Once this happens, this will mean we are one step nearer our aim make all football grounds an inclusive environment for all supporters irrespective of gender, race, religion or sexual orientation.”
