Lois Fidler discusses the UEFA Pro Licence and The FA Elite Coaches’ award

Lois Fidler is a busy woman.

The England Women’s U17s Head Coach is the fourth English female to study for the UEFA Pro Licence qualification and is also part of a select group of coaches working towards the new FA Elite Coaches’ Award.

Fidler attended St. George’s Park this week for the second stage of the Pro Licence, undertaking practical coaching sessions as well as observation of fellow coaches.

'Management of self and others' is one of the core competencies of the course and a characteristic which Fidler believes is important to her own development.

She said: “A lot of it [the Pro Licence course] is how you manage yourself moving forwards to give yourself the best possible chance to do what you do well.

“The key messages are being able to make important decisions in the heat of battle, thinking clearly under pressure and not allowing negativity to zap your energy.

"So it’s about self-management and being the best you can be.”

Where the Pro Licence course carries a strong focus on an individual’s off-field behaviour, The FA Elite Coaches’ award is more practical in design.

Fidler explained: “We talk a lot at the moment about The Future Game, the evolving player and the evolving coach to meet those needs in the future.

“The Elite Coaches’ Course is very much about challenging our current mindset, thinking outside of the box in terms of how we deliver, plan and evaluate sessions to grow as coaches to develop or meet the needs of the game moving forward.”
