St. George's Park set for official opening on Tuesday

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will begin a new chapter for English football tomorrow when they join Roy Hodgson’s England senior squad to officially open St.George’s Park, The FA’s new national football centre.

The Royal Party will be accompanied by many special guests from the football and sporting world for the official opening of England’s new £100m training home.

The Duke of Cambridge, who is the Honourary President of The FA, will officially launch the new national facility after enjoying a tour of the site and meeting senior figures from The FA, local community figureheads and young grassroots players.

It promises to be a landmark occasion for English football.

The national football centre concept has been mooted for many years, with initial discussions dating back to 1975, and on Tuesday the vision will be realised. England will have a new training home for all 24 England teams and a base to raise the profile of English coaching.

The Royal pair will also spend time with England Manager Roy Hodgson and his squad as they train at St. George's Park for the very first time ahead of their 2014 World Cup qualification game against San Marino on Friday.

Julie Harrington, Managing Director of St.George’s Park, is delighted that the new complex will receive the royal seal of approval.

She said: “I’m thrilled and really proud that they are coming to have a look at what is the culmination of a lot of hard work by a huge number of people. The couple have done a huge amount to make the royal family appeal to a younger generation.

“Some people have known the Duke and Duchess were coming a few weeks ago, but it had to be kept secret.

“There will be people from the local community involved, and we have been getting the pitches ready to play on, as local schools will be taking part in demonstrations.”

Hope Powell, England Women’s National Coach and a number of players from the England Women’s team will also meet Their Royal Highnesses.

FA Chairman David Bernstein said: "We are particularly delighted that both the Duke and Duchess can join us to open this facility."

Chairman of St. George's Park David Sheepshanks added: "This is a wonderful reward for all of the people that have worked so hard to bring St. George's Park to reality.”
