Ed Balls bags a brace as Labour MPs beat Press Lobby in annual game

Shadow Cabinet pair Ed Balls MP and Andy Burnham MP were on form at the weekend by firing Labour to victory over the Press Lobby ahead of this week's annual Party Conference in Manchester.

Organised by The FA, the match has become a firm fixture in the MPs' calendar during Conference season and it didn't take the politicians long to hit their stride as Burnham, RT Hon MP for Leigh and Shadow Secretary Of State for Health, latched onto a flick from strike-partner Balls to fire the Labour MPs into a seventh minute lead.

They did have to rely on Toby Perkins to keep their lead in tact though, as the MP for Chesterfield made a fine penalty save before the break to set up his side for a convincing second-half performance.

Shadow Chancellor Of The Exchequor Balls got his first of the afternoon on the hour mark, breaking into the box before finishing well with his left foot and the Rt Hon MP for Morley and Outwood was felled in the box 15 minutes later before dusting himself off and scoring from the penalty spot.

"We've had a year to think about getting revenge from last year and we really enjoyed doing it," said Clive Betts MP and Chairman of the UK Parliamentary Football Club.

"I thought we played some excellent football today and really enjoyed it. We're out there because we want to win.

"We all love our football, and we're all Members of Parliament, but we want to be part of playing the game and that's why we do it."
