The FA and the 'Justice for Gay Africans' campaign are hosting a debate on multi-discrimination at Wembley Stadium this evening [Thursday 8 November].
Brendon Batson will sit on the panel alongside Stonewall FC’s Aslie Pitter MBE and Annette Wilson of Manchester’s Pride Sport.
Different modes of exclusion will be under the spotlight and the debate will focus on the experiences of black and minority ethnic (BME) and lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans- and intersex (LGBTI) athletes in sport.
FA General Secretary Alex Horne said: “The FA is committed to football for everyone and we’re delighted to be hosting this unique event at Wembley Stadium.
“Earlier this year we launched our 'Opening Doors and Joining In' programme which supports lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGB&T) communities to get actively involved in football without fear of discrimination or prejudice.
“The Justice for Gay Africans campaign is closely aligned to what we’re looking to achieve with 'Opening Doors and Joining In' and education is key to ensure that no-one suffers discrimination for their gender or sexuality.”
Godwyns Onwuchekwa, Co-ordinator of the Justice for Gay Africans campaign, added: “Justice for Gay Africans believes that for progress to be made towards a society where lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans- intersex (LGBTI) people are not treated differently, dialogue and engagement with the different constituents of that society must be intrinsic tools.
“Without such steps, policies and laws that aim to correct anomalies will only become tools for punishment.
“We therefore strive to build a bridge between different views through creating spaces to discuss the tough issues in a friendly environment and this collaboration with The FA is one such event.”
