Former Leeds and USA winger Robbie Rogers has announced he is gay

The Football Association has offered its full support to former Leeds United winger Robbie Rogers after he came out as gay.

The 25-year-old said on Friday that he was to “step away from the game” after coming out on his personal online blog.

Rogers, capped 18 times by the United States, had been on loan at Stevenage until last month.

Darren Bailey, The FA’s Director of Football Governance and Regulation, said: “Following the announcement by Robbie Rogers on Friday, The FA is trying to make contact with him offering our support.

"Whether Robbie stays in the game or steps away for a break he has our full backing.

"Last year saw The FA launch 'Opening Doors and Joining In', a six-point action plan for making the game inclusive for LGB&T people as well as ensuring we tackle homophobia and transphobia robustly whenever it arises.

"During February and beyond, football is supporting Football v Homophobia and we are encouraging clubs at every level to support this campaign.

"This week saw Stonewall FC's Aslie Pitter MBE announced as an FA ambassador for diversity and inclusion in football as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations."
