In a match played in the best possible spirit, the Southern Amateur League won through to the Third Round of The FA Carlsberg National League Systems Cup against the Mid Sussex League at Burgess Hill Town FC.
It was a nervy start to the game and both sides took time to settle and with most of the play being confined to the middle third, goal mouth incidents were few and far between.
The visitors broke the deadlock after 38 minutes though, when Anthony Mann fed the ball to Shaun Banham on the left wing. Despite calls for offside, he proceeded to run through and lay the ball into the path of SAL skipper James Ayres, who tapped in from six yards.
The Southern Amateur League had a dream start to the second half and were able to increase the lead in the 47th minute, when Osman Akkaya’s left foot shot was adjudged to have been handled in the area. Nathan Violet stepped up to slot home from the penalty spot to notch his third goal in the competition.
The Mid Sussex Team did not lie down and went in search of a goal, but the SAL defence held firm and with just a few minutes left on the clock, Anthony Mann made it 3-0 following fine work along the right flank from Matt and Chris Kerr.
Despite the result, there were handshakes all round at the final whistle and back into the bar for some first class Sussex hospitality.
