England heroes Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard were satisfied after helping Fabio Capello make a winning start to life as England Manager.

While Jermaine Jenas and Shaun Wright-Phillips got the goals, Rooney's surging runs and Gerrard's steadying influence in midfield contributed to the 2-1 victory at Wembley.

Rooney went close to scoring himself, particularly in the second half, but he was complimentary of the two who netted on Wednesday.

"Jermaine Jenas came in today and we ideally want midfielders running beyond me up front and you saw that today.

"Wrighty (Wright-Phillips) and JJ (Jenas) got the goals and it's a good platform for us getting off to a winning start."

Rooney added that the England players had been put their paces by the new manager.

"We've done quite well considering we've worked hard for two or three days," he added.

Gerrard, skippering England for the seventh time, gave an insight into Capello's philosophy but stressed England fans might have to be patient.

"He wants us to be really difficult to beat and he wants us to be exciting going forward but it's going to take time," he said.

"We've got a long way to go before the World Cup qualifiers. I'm sure we'll be a better team come the World Cup qualifiers."
