Konchesky, 24, thought his dreams of appearing in Germany has disappeared after he was played out of position at Charlton and failed to secure a regular first-team place.

But the talented full-back was handed a new lease of life when he joined his boyhood club West Ham during the summer and has been outstanding for Alan Pardew’s side.

And with Ashley Cole and Jamie Carragher ruled out through injury, Konchesky has vowed to make a major impact on Sven-Goran Eriksson this week and stake his claims for a permanent place in the squad.

Konchesky said: "This is a big chance for me to impress. Ashley Cole is struggling with his foot and Wayne Bridge is not fully fit yet, so hopefully I can prove something to Sven and maybe put myself in the frame for the World Cup.

"After all the speculation, I thought I had a good chance of breaking into the last squad with Ashley ruled out through injury.

"But it wasn’t to be and I just had to keep working hard for West Ham. Hopefully I can take my chance this time.

"There was a time at Charlton when I thought I would never get back into the England squad. But I am now playing where I am happy and hopefully I can do enough to impress Sven.

"This means so much to me because I have worked really hard since I joined West Ham. I’m sure it will mean a lot to West Ham and the manager.

"I want to say thank you to Alan Pardew for playing me every week and helping me get back into the squad."

Konchesky still has mixed memories of his last and only cap for England when he made his debut during the 3-1 friendly defeat against Australia back in February 2003.

But with West Ham flying high in the Premiership and Konchesky enjoying a regular run back at left-back, he is confident that he has now become an even better player than the last time he joined up with the squad.

Konchesky added: "I wasn’t playing in the position I wanted to at Charlton which affected my chances of playing left-back for England. It was a big effort for me to go back to left back and learn my trade again.

"But now I have moved to West Ham and playing in the position I want to every week, hopefully that will allow Sven to see more play a lot more.

"I feel my game has developed since I signed for West Ham. I am learning things every day under the manager and with the other players.

"It breeds confidence playing every week and hopefully I am showing that and can get even better.

"Knowing the manager wanted to bring me here was a big thing for me. And in the back of my mind it gave the confidence to try and break back into the England squad."
