Former Newcastle United forward Paul Brayson could be the toast of the Toon after he guided Northwich Victoria to a Third Round tie with Sunderland.
Conference North side Northwich toppled Woking 2-1 on Tuesday night, courtesy of Brayson’s 59th-minute winner to set up a glamour tie at The Stadium of Light.
Brayson is making quite a name for himself in the competition this season. The former Newcastle United forward has been in prolific form, winning The Player of the Round twice, although a winning goal against Mick McCarthy’s side would eclipse any of his recent achievements.
Martin Allen’s Brentford will join Northwich in the Third Round after a 1-0 win over Oldham. Lloyd Owusu scored the only goal of the night.
Northampton striker Scott McGleish’s golden run continued when he bagged a brace in his side’s 2-0 win over Stevenage Borough. McGleish, whose form has peaked since he broke a tooth, took his tally to six goals in four games.
The game of the night came at Valley Parade where visitors Barnsley beat Bradford City 5-3 after extra-time.
In a match which ended 3-3 after 90 minutes, two goals each from Paul Hayes and Martin Devaney sealed Barnsley’s passage through to the Third Round.
Port Vale and Cheltenham also paved a way into the next round, courtesy of victories over Bristol Rovers and Oxford respectively.
