Eniola Aluko wants Birmingham City to consistently challenge Arsenal at the top of the women’s game.

The two sides meet in Wednesday’s Continental Cup Final at Underhill, with the Blues having finished runners-up to Laura Harvey’s side for the last two seasons.

They also lost to the Gunners in this Final last year, but Aluko knows Birmingham have made enough progress to challenge Arsenal’s supremacy for the foreseeable future.

The England forward said: “We lost the League to them last year on the final day of the season so we know we are getting closer.

“Take nothing away from Arsenal because they are a great side and are deserved winners but I think the women's game needs clubs to challenge them a bit more.

The FA WSL has helped make the games more competitive and now it is up to each of us to match Arsenal's winning mentality on a more regular basis.”

Birmingham made inroads on the Londoners’ trophy haul by winning The FA Women’s Cup in May for the first-ever time.

Aluko played in The Final win over Chelsea and now she wants to add another piece of silverware to the collection.

She added: “We have had a good season on the whole. We won The FA Cup, we did well in the League again and we are in this Final as well. And we also made our Champions League debut which was a great experience for us.

“I think we have played well in this competition. We competed in every game and haven't lost a game on the way to The Final so that gives us confidence.

“Anything can happen on the day so we will go into the game looking to win another Cup.”
