Harper backs Respect scheme

Magpies goalkeeper backs new Respect scheme in Newcastle.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper has given his support to a scheme which promotes Respect and good behaviour in grassroots football in the north-east.

The Newcastle United Foundation and the Pin Point Recruitment Junior Football League have teamed up to try and raise standards in junior football behaviour by rewarding youngsters with ball-boy places at Newcastle United home games at St James Park.

The League’s member clubs can now apply for the places throughout the season, provided they hold FA Charter Standard status, can show how they promote good behaviour within their club and have not been charged with any serious disciplinary offence during the current season.

Speaking about the scheme, Harper said: “Without grassroots football, the professional game would not exist and that is why it is so important for there to be Respect and good behaviour at this level of the game, and indeed at every level.

"This is a terrific scheme and one I’m delighted to support.”

Since Christmas, two places have been allocated each to Newcastle East End, Hexham and Cramlington Town with Seaton Delaval Dynamos the next to benefit.

Pin Point League spokesman Gordon Stewart added: “The scheme has become extremely popular with our member clubs who see it as a reward for their efforts in creating a safe, fair and enjoyable environment for their players.

"This scheme helps in promoting The FA’s Respect programme.”

League Chairman Keith Morris concluded: “We have seen a marked level of improvement at matches since this excellent scheme was introduced, and thank Newcastle United Foundation for helping us.”
