After two rounds of the UEFA Futsal Cup qualifying Tournament, three teams are still in contention for the two qualifying places.
The tournament staged at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre involves the national champions of England, France, Armenia and Albania. The first match of the competition pitted FC White Bear from London against Dinamo Tirana. The English Champions are mainly comprised of Eastern European players based in London but team manager Alex Saily has recently recruited three home grown players into his squad.
FC White Bear dominated possession in this first game against a cautious Albanian Team but they were unable to turn this into goals. The Albanians sought to frustrate White Bear and then catch them on the counterattack and so it proved with a crafty 2-1 victory. The second game featured Tal Grig of Yerevan against the French Champions Roubaix.
Tal Grig have a team full of Internationals but lost their captain Armen in the first few minutes - a real blow as he has scored 144 goals in their most recent League Campaign. Futsal is relatively new to France but Roubaix competed well in the first half and were unfortunate to reach the break 2-1 behind. However in the second half Tal Grig stepped up a gear and playing free flowing Futsal romped to a 7-2 victory.
Day Two opened with FC White Bear seeking to make amends for their poor first day performance in a match against Roubaix. A night’s sleep and some harsh words in the dressing room appeared to do them a power of good as they inflicted a 6-0 defeat on the French Team.
Sunday closed with an outstanding game between Tal Grig and Dinamo Tirana that finished 5-4 to to the Armenians. The Albanians were behind four times in the match but came back each time. They clawed themselves back to 4-4 with less than two minutes to go only to see Tal Grig score the winner with three seconds to go from a disputed ten metre penalty.
Monday is a rest day for the teams and the competition concludes on Tuesday with White Bear needing a win against Tal Grig to secure a place to play against SC Benfica in the next round. Dinamo Tirana also need a win against a French Team who have played better than their results suggest.
