Tottenham legend Justin Edinburgh.
Justin's time again?
By Tony Incenzo. Wednesday, 10 November 2004.
Justin Edinburgh was part of the Spurs team that won the famous ‘Gazza’ Cup Final in 1991.
Thirteen years on, Edinburgh is back on The FA Cup trail as manager of Ryman League Premier Division Billericay Town. And they face as appetising First Round tie at home to Stevenage Borough on Saturday.
Edinburgh is looking forward to the clash and feels that his side have nothing to lose against the Conference outfit from Hertfordshire.
He said: "Billericay have only reached the First Round once before in their history, so we have equalled that.
"We now have the opportunity to smash all our club records by reaching the Second Round. The players don’t need any more incentive than that.
"We have been favourites to win each of our games in the qualifying rounds against Southend Manor, Dorking, East Preston and Flackwell Heath. But now the roles are reversed this time and we are underdogs against Stevenage.
"I am sure they won’t like it too much coming to our place. Any Conference side is going to be tough opposition. Stevenage are a full-time club and their recent form has been excellent.
"We don’t fear them but we will show them the respect they deserve. There is 90 minutes of football on Saturday and we know the upsets that The FA Cup can produce."
Edinburgh made more than 200 top-flight appearances for Tottenham before finishing his playing days with Portsmouth. The highlight of his career came in The FA Cup and that never-to-be-forgotten day at Wembley Stadium.
Edinburgh said: "It was fantastic to win The Cup with Spurs in 1991 but it will always be remembered as the ‘Paul Gascoigne Final’.
"It stopped the nation and the whole world from seeing the very best of ’Gazza’ after the injury he suffered against Nottingham Forest that afternoon. No one expected us to win the game after what happened.
"We lost Gazza who had been stretchered off and we were 1-0 down. But we threw caution to the wind and we went on to win 2-1. It just shows you should never give up and I may have to draw on my memories from that match to pass on advice to my players for this Saturday."
Billericay warmed up for The FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Conference South side Bognor Regis Town last weekend in The FA Trophy First Round. It was a trip to the South Coast that greatly pleased Edinburgh.
"I was delighted with the result and especially the performance. It was probably the best we have played all season and it puts us in good spirits for this week’s clash against Stevenage.
"We knew a lot about Bognor beforehand. They are an excellent footballing side and it is a great pitch to go and play on. That suited my team. We like to get the ball down and play. We had the upper hand from the kick-off and we fully deserved to win the game.
"We were the underdogs as Bognor are doing quite well in the Nationwide South. So there was no pressure on us and I think that showed in our performance.
"We have been drawn away to Ryman League leaders Yeading in the Second Round of the Trophy. We have got a point to prove because we went there in the league and dominated the game, but we lost 3-1 because they took their chances and we didn’t. So it is a tricky tie and one we are looking forward to."
Billericay currently lie mid-table in the Ryman Premier. How does the manager feel about the season so far?
"We’ve got two games in hand on most teams and we are only three points off third place. So I think we are going well and I have no complaints. And with the way we are playing, the team gelling together and the squad I’ve got , I am more than confident that we will be up there and pushing by Christmas-time.
"This is my second season in charge. It was difficult last year as there was a lot happening behind the scenes at the club. It wasn’t particularly the greatest budget to work with either.
"But we have new owners, development going on and off the pitch and a lot more activity on it, with getting players in who want to play for the club.
"The average age of my team is 22, so we are putting our faith in youth and that is what I am trying to achieve.
"We have had a good start this season but nothing has been achieved yet. We just have to keep chipping away and hopefully we can have some success."
Billericay Town are just 180 minutes away from The FA Cup Third Round and a possible tie against one of the Premiership big boys. Is Edinburgh dreaming of a return to White Hart Lane in The Cup?
"We can dream a little bit. But we will concentrate on Saturday first of all and see what comes after that!"
