The Middlesex CFA Development Team, led by County Development Manager Stuart Allen, put together a proposal for an under 20's tournament for the summer/autumn of 2004, and sought feedback from local clubs as to how they could be better supported.

A good response prompted the Middlesex team to broaden their horizons and set up the county’s only Under 20s division.

With the assistance of the Middlesex County League, Football Development Officer Jason Kilby got the ball rolling. A few months down the track, the division has now come together and now has enough teams signed up to the league to commence for the 2004/05 football season.

“It’s very exciting that the clubs involved have taken the bold step to sign up to this innovative project” said Jason. “A few clubs are disappointed that they don’t have the resources in place immediately to get on board, but it’s looking even more positive for the following season”.

Middlesex FA are looking forward to a competitive season, aiming to increase the size and number of divisions for 2005/06 and help the transition of youth footballers to adult football.

“The problem we’re addressing is that of 16-18 year old players fail to enjoy playing against bigger, stronger and in some cases more wiley adults.” said Jason.

“It can be a big step up from organised school or youth football, so We’re hoping to run the limited age banded teams with just a few overage players. That way, the younger players gain exposure to the adult game and decide to stay in it, rather than just hang up their boots.”

Stuart Allen, County Development Manager added: “It’s vital that we provide opportunities for our youth players to progress into the adult game. The under 20's division will ensure that we create the right environment for them to develop into senior players, and therefore prolong their partcipation in the game.”
