The Royal Navy have been spreading the 'football gospel' on a recent military exercise in Senegal.
Chief Petty Officer Ian Pearson and his colleagues spent a day coaching local children at a school in Toubacouta where the Army Engineers were building an extension to a school.
The officers then organised a six-a-side 'Coupe de Senegal' Tournament before England memorabilia, caps, keyrings and pens, provided by the FA, were distributed to the children involved.
Ian told TheFA.com: "I decided to try and arrange a day of coaching when I received our itinerary, having seen The FA’s Communique magazine article on David James, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand [coaching in Malawi earlier this year], which I received on my FA Level 2 Coaching Course in September.
"I contacted The FA and Royal Navy FA for some sponsorship and purchased 20 footballs myself, which were handed out at the school and across a number of local villages.
"The smiles on the faces of the children were so rewarding and the concept is something I'm very keen to replicate on my next overseas mission."
Captain Paul Cunningham, Head of Corporate Communications at the Royal Navy FA said: "The Royal Navy has ships and personnel all over the world at any given time. The RNFA is constantly looking for ways to use this unique global presence to promote football abroad.
"Ian’s foresight and commitment have made a lot of Senegalese youngsters very happy and he is a perfect example of why we are so keen to provide our people with FA coaching skills."
