The West Midlands’ based organisation works within the communities and thanks to funding from the “Lets Kick Racism Out of Football” campaign were able to offer around 25 women aged between 17 and 67 the chance to experience football for the very first time.

Community Coaches Alison O’Connell, Nicky Pearson and Hannah Waddell put the women through their paces in fun skills sessions, and then offered them the chance to put their footwork to the test in small sided friendly games.

“Most of these women had never even considered having a go at football before today, but it was just fantastic to see everyone getting stuck in,” said Alison.

“I think some of the ladies found they have a talent for the game, whilst for others it was just really, really good fun.” Sameena Parvez is Ashram Housing Association’s Senior Women’s Development Worker.

She secured the funding and organised today’s event: “By providing this opportunity we hoped to give this group of women the chance to enjoy a brand new experience that fitted into their day to day life whilst removing the barriers that may have stopped them from getting involved in the past.

“I’ll be totally honest and say that I didn’t expect quite as much enthusiasm as the ladies have shown this morning – the coaches did a great job in getting everyone participating. I think we’ve all succeeded in combating a few stereotypes and had a great time doing it!”
