The FA recognises that it can only deliver the Football Development strategy with the support of its many partners at national and local level, so to recognise their work and reward good practice The FA has established the Football Development Awards.
The Award will be presented in the following categories during the National Football Development Conference on 23 May at Tottenham Hotpsur FC, with the winners receiving a certificate and a cheque for £1000 :
- Club Development
- Ethnic Minority Communities
- Women’s Football
- Disability Football
- Social Inclusion
- Volunteer Development
- Education
- Small Sided Football
- Health

1. Club Development
Organisations should demonstrate the work they have undertaken to support the implementation of the FA Club Development Strategy. Organisations should demonstrate innovative approaches, new partnerships, successes to date, in-service training programmes that support the growth and sustainability of the following:
- Charter Standard Clubs
- Charter Standard Community Clubs
Organisations should provide proof of the impact that the work has had on their local community.
2. Ethnic minorities/Race Equality
Organisations should demonstrate how they have developed programmes to include ethnic minorities, created new partnerships and supported campaigns such as Kick it Out Week of Action
Organisations should provide proof of impact that the work has had on their local communities.
3. Women’s and Girls’ Football
Organisations should demonstrate the work they have undertaken to support the growth of women and girls football including the following:
- Active Sports Talent Development
- Girls Football in Education Women’s Football
Organisations should provide proof of impact that the work has had on their local communities.
4. Disability Football
Organisations should demonstrate the work they have undertaken to support people with disabilities to participate and be involved in football including programmes such as:
- Ability Counts
- Coaching Centres
- Coaching Disabled Footballers courses
Organisations should provide proof of impact that the work has had on their local community.
5. Social Inclusion and Community Development
Organisations should demonstrate the work they have undertaken within their communities to include everyone in football including:
- Training for staff
- Engaging and motivating disaffected young people
- Using football to deliver on a number of agendas
- Football Foundation projects
Organisations should provide proof of impact that the work has had on their local communities.
6. Volunteer Development
Organisations should demonstrate the work they have undertaken to support volunteers including the following:
- Recruiting
- Supporting
- Rewarding volunteers
Organisations should provide proof of impact that the work has had on their local communities.
7. Education
Organisations should demonstrate how they have worked strategically and in partnership with like-minded bodies to develop and deliver PE and Football programmes or Further/ Higher Education programmes including:
- Raising Standards in the curriculum - FA TOP Sport Football
- Charter Standard Schools/Colleges
- Competitions
- Club Links
- Out of School Hours Learning
- Training and development
- Young Football Leadership/Coach (development and deployment)
- Learning Through Football programmes
Organisations should provide proof of impact that the work has had on their local Sports Partnership.
8. Small sided football
Applicants should be able to demonstrate how they have developed small-sided football-5/6/7 aside and/or futsal. The award is open to commercial, voluntary and public sector providers, including schools, colleges or universities. Applicants should satisfy at least one of the following criteria:
- Introduction of small sided football or futsal to a new group or a previously disadvantaged community
- Consistent high levels of provision for the playing public
- Maintaining participation in football through the introduction of small sided football
9. Health
A new category in 2005, applicants will need to demonstrate proof of working with health agencies to use football to address the physical activity and healthy lifestyle agenda.
