At half-time of the England Under 21 international against Holland, Awards were presented to Westella and Willerby AFC (East Riding CFA) and Tingley Athletic and Ripton City Panthers (both from the West Riding FA).

Westella & Willerby AFC. are one of the oldest established clubs not only in the East Riding County Football League, but in the East Riding and the surrounding districts itself.

Founded in the early 1920's by a well known local land owner of the time, Captain Sykes, the club began it's early life in the County League.

Around this time the club was given it's original nickname - "The Friesians" , after Captain Sykes' well known herd of cows! and today the club's colours remain black & white (stripes) as they were all those years ago.

As part of the clubs review of "where the club was going", some two and a half years ago they formulated a Sports Development Plan taking into account, FA guidelines, Sports Council and Local Sports Development Unit guidelines.

The result was a commitment to:

Provide our members with the opportunity to progress their football careers along a sports development continuum. This continuum ranges from youngsters acquiring basic football skills, through participation in organised Junior football, onto competition at Senior level, whether it be Local or National - all at facilities of as high a standard as possible, and with the best available coaching and support services possible.

Our aim is for excellence in everything that we do and what we offer our members, whether it be in terms of organisation, off the field activities, coaching facilities, to name but a few. We aim to provide an environment where people can reach the highest possible level they can achieve or want to achieve.

We want to provide our members young or old with the opportunity to play football at the standard they are comfortable with. We will encourage those who show excellence at an early age to develop their skills by recommending them to a Professional School of Excellence if necessary. Those who wish to play for the enjoyment and the participation can do so in a friendly well organised environment - in effect increasing and extending participation for all.

Les Howie, The FA's National Club Development Manager said:

"I'd like to congratulate all three clubs on their achievements, and welcome the commitment and enthusiasm that these clubs have shown. The FA Charter Standard remains a priority of The FA and is a major part of our Football Development Strategy. These clubs really are flying the flag for raising standards at the grassroots of the game, and I hope will continue to lead the way for other clubs across the country."
