Thursday was judgement day for Southampton FC’s ‘Be Fit and Healthy’ competition.
For the second year running, the club has organised a competition for local primary schools to help promote the importance of healthy eating and an active lifestyle among children.
Over 2,100 local primary school children from ten schools were involved in the campaign. They were asked to study recommended food groups and fitness levels of a professional footballer and design a meal plan for their chosen player.
Six finalists were shortlisted and presented their submissions to the judging panel on Thursday afternoon at an event at St Mary’s Stadium attended by George Burley, Gareth Bale, Claus Lundekvam, Andrew Surman and Nathan Dyer.
The winner, Millie Healey from St. Monica School in Southampton, was presented with a shield and match tickets to Southampton v Southend for her and all her classmates.
Millie will now also visit the club’s training ground in Marchwood before the end of the season to see her meal prepared by the club chefs and served to the first team squad.
Mark Abrahams, Southampton FC Head of Community, said: "We received a large number of entries this year and the feedback from schools is that the kids have really responded well to the campaign.
"As a club, we are aware of the importance of educating local children. With role models such as George, Claus, Gareth, Drew and Nathan as well as the rest of the team, we are able to spread these healthy eating messages and engage our young supporters."
