Men in Black are set to be joined by even more Women in Black in the Midlands this season, as the Birmingham County FA kicks off a Female Only Referee Training Course this summer.

A limited number of places are still available on the course, which is being held at County HQ, Great Barr between 27-31 August and anyone interested is urged to move fast with spots on the course in demand.

“There are currently 60 women out of around 2000 registered referees officiating at various levels throughout Birmingham, the Black Country and Warwickshire,” said BCFA Referee Development Officer, David Nixon.

“Obviously we want to address this and boost the numbers as much as we can.  Female Only courses remove some of the barriers that might have prevented women from getting involved, ensuring they have the skills and confidence to start their refereeing career.”

Lisa Rashid qualified on the first ever Female Only Referee Training course, organised by Birmingham County FA in 2002. She is now a Level 4 Supply League Referee and will be supporting the course as part of her progression to becoming a Registered Instructor.

“There are lots of reasons that people become referees – to exercise, to contribute to the game; the list is endless,” added David.

“There are also some fantastic opportunities to turn what is a great hobby into a career – Lisa is one of a number of young female officials in our region who are doing just that!”

The Birmingham County FA’s Girls and Women’s Football Development Officer Heather Cowan added: “We are committed to increasing the opportunities for more females to get involved in football.

“This includes refereeing as well as playing or coaching so we are looking forward to helping even more women benefit from what the game has to offer.”
