Sandhurst threaten the Pewsey Vale goal during Saturday's FA Vase tie at Bottom Meadow
By David Barber. Wednesday, 26 September 2007.
The superfan has seen four more games, including an FA Vase tie in Berkshire and two FA Youth Cup ties in Kent. That's 55 for the season and 5,387 altogether.
The Vase action on a sunny Saturday was at Sandhurst Town of the Combined Counties League. I’d never been there before but it took less than an hour and a half door-to-door.
It meant a train from Paddington, changing at Reading, and a ten-minute walk from Sandhurst Station down the main road to Bottom Meadow – home of "The Fizzers".
I was on the Plymouth train, so made a mental note on alighting to try not to doze off and wake up in Devon. There was a sprinkling of Wigan fans on it too in their replica shirts, their heroes playing Reading in the Premiership.
I can guarantee that only one person on that packed train was going to Sandhurst Town v Pewsey Vale in The FA Vase Second Round Qualifying.
It turned out to be a curious tie. Sandhurst looked short of confidence after losing their previous two games, 6-1 to Chalfont in The FA Cup and 3-1 to Chertsey in the CCL and both at home. But they still had more of the possession and more of the chances.
Pewsey grabbed a surprise lead on 15 minutes and held it until two minutes from time. Then the ‘keeper spilled a free-kick and the ball was bundled in by a player in a red shirt.
Sandhurst were "fizzing" in the extra half-hour and won the tie 2-1. I’ll remember the game for a yellow card to a Pewsey player just before half-time. The ref said: "Every single decision I make, you want to challenge. It stops now. OK?" That’s the way to do it!
There were four games to choose from at Ealing Central Sports Ground on Sunday morning. It was still bright but windy. I went for Perivale Residents Association v Old Uxonians in the Hayes & District Sunday League and wasn’t disappointed.
PRA were a goal up in 50 seconds, a shot by their No.7 going through a hole in the back of the net and lodging under a hedge.
The crowd (of four) was in a frenzy when the visitors nearly levelled immediately from a corner. Then there was a delay of a couple of minutes when the ball got wedged under a car and the lino had to slide underneath and poke it clear with his flag.
The game finished 6-2 in PRA’s favour and was full of incident. Their No.5 powered a header against the underside of the bar when he was actually standing on the goal-line and soon after that there was a shocking three-way collision as three players chased after a high bouncing ball.
The collision happened near the penalty mark and involved the Uxonian ‘keeper, a defender and a substitute striker.
I could see it coming. All three were flat out on the ground and motionless. Initially it looked very bad – but I’m pleased to report that they all got to their feet eventually and continued playing. I’d been particularly concerned for the striker who seemed to take a double hit.
Monday night’s FA Youth Cup First Round Qualifying tie was a Kent derby between Bromley and Maidstone United at Hayes Lane, the Stones winning 3-1 and missing a penalty.
Sevenoaks Town held Lewes for half-an-hour in the same competition at Greatness Park last night but ultimately found themselves on the wrong end of an 8-0 drubbing.
I watched the latter from the "home stand" with sister Kathy – it was her biggest score.
