Is this a record? Games in Middlesex, Kent and Sussex in the last week have brought him up to 19 for this season and 5,351 altogether.

That week began at Griffin Park, now with all four sides covered. Brentford, in League Two and managed by Terry Butcher, were only 1-0 down to Premiership Reading at half-time but ended up losing 6-1.

Even though I kept hearing that there was "a good service on all (tube) lines", it took an hour and a half to get to the ground from Paddington. I’d hate to be around when it’s a bad service.

The following evening, Thursday, I was in Sevenoaks where my sister Kathy lives. Alfie, her little Yorkshire terrier, had recently "done his cruciate" chasing a fox on a slippery surface and was feeling a bit sorry for himself. An operation to repair the damage could cost a grand.

Coincidentally (cough) Kent League Sevenoaks Town were due to play Dartford that evening, so I called their Greatness Park ground half-an-hour before kick-off to check that the game was on. "Hello, Real Madrid", said the man picking up the ‘phone. If only.

Sevenoaks had a good first half, holding the Ryman Division One North side to 1-1, but their skipper hurt his knee and became a passenger in midfield.

They didn’t seem to have any subs, whereas Dartford had about 20. The Darts ran out 4-1 winners before a crowd of 51.

Down to Eastbourne for the weekend, with Borough v Horsham the centrepiece. It had been a sunny Saturday morning but it was looking like rain as I got off a packed 1A bus to walk along Priory Road to the ground.

Horsham were ahead in two minutes, Borough levelled five minutes later and a fixture supporting the "Save the DGH" campaign finished 1-1.

Last night’s friendly at Avenue Park featured Bedfont Green (Combined Counties) and Hanwell Town (Spartan South Midlands).

Hanwell won 3-0, meaning that none of my 13 games in July had resulted in a home win. Three draws and ten away wins. Crazy.

CB Hounslow United are also in the Combined Counties, not the Middlesex County as I suggested in this season’s first column. I’m now standing in the corner wearing a cone-shaped hat with a "D" on it – and it doesn’t stand for David.
