Kris thinks his second goal against Bournemouth is a contender for goal of the season.
Goal of the season?By Kris Commons. Friday, 27 April 2007.
After a second brace in as many weeks, Kris describes his two stunning long-range strikes before adding that his second should win the club's 'Goal of the Season' competition.
Hi everyone.
After scoring two against Brentford last week, I scored two more against Bournemouth, and both were goal of the season contenders!
I can't remember how many goals I have scored with my right foot. Most of them end up near the corner flag. We got a quick free-kick, I made a run inside and was about a yard ahead of the defender. I looked up at goal, 25 yards out, and just thought 'why not?' I don't think I have ever struck a ball so sweetly with my right foot in my whole life.
It was heading towards the top corner but I was not sure it was going in. It always seemed to be going away from the keeper and ended up looping over him. The ball felt a bit more flat than normal - perhaps that's why it moved so much in the air. At one point I thought it was going over.
I really enjoyed the second goal. I knew exactly what I was going to do. I was playing just behind the front two when I got the ball outside the box - they gave me too much time. I hit it powerfully, but it was not a case of just getting your knee over the ball and smashing it. It hit the underside of the bar and bounced in - that made it look twice as good.
I jogged off towards the fans to celebrate with them. I shook a few hands and gave some high-fives - I did not want to leave them hanging.
I preferred that one to the first one. There was an element of luck involved in the right-footed one, but the second one I knew what I wanted to do. For it to come off perfectly felt great.
Our club website is running a goal of the season competition. Both my strikes have been short-listed in the top-five. I must have half a chance of winning! If I don't win with those two, then I'll never win. The other three goals on the list were decent though. Lewis McGugan's free-kick against Gillingham is up there. Jack Lester's mazy dribble against Bradford was good, as was Grant Holt's left foot finish against Crewe. I'd go for mine though!
When we went 2-0 up we could play a bit more casually. It helped us massively when they were reduced to ten men earlier in the game. I thought it was a really bad tackle. It was rash, high and aggressive - it could have been really nasty for Jack [Lester]. I could see why the referee gave a red card. We tried to spread the ball wide and make them chase it. It was a hot day so it must have been hard for Bournemouth. Fair play to them, they gave it a go.
I had a part to play in our third goal. The ball came over my head, but I was not sure if it had gone out for a corner, so I was waiting for the ref to whistle. When he didn't, I lifted the ball to the back stick. Jack [Lester] missed it but Prutts [David Prutton] stuck it in.
I am playing better and better. Hopefully I can keep improving. If I do then I should be hitting top form for the play-offs, if we don't get automatic promotion.
Bristol City are four points above us with two games left. They are not out of reach yet. They are in a comfortable position but they could slip up. There is a lot of pressure on them.
They are playing Millwall and Rotherham - they gave us two of the hardest games we have had this season. We could do with Chops [Neil Harris] doing us a favour when Millwall play City. I'm sure he will give it his all, just like he did against us. Chops knows our situation.
We play Leyton Orient on Saturday - that's our third game in London this month. I don't mind the travelling. It's a good chance to have some banter and play some cards. It's going to be a tough game. They are down there fighting for points. I heard that the gaffer has been looking at a couple of their players, so they will want to put in a performance. That will make it more difficult for us. I have to say though, if we play like we should do then we should win.
Our club won the League One Groundsman of the Year award and I have to say the pitch on Saturday was the best it has been this season. The grass was quite long and he'd watered it just before kick-off. It was just right.
A few people have asked about my contract situation. At the moment nothing will be settled until the summer. My agent has met with Mark Arthur, the club Chief Executive, but we will all be in a better position to know what's going on by the end of the season. That also applies to the club as they are not sure what budget they will have - that will depend on what division we are in.
I don't want to leave Forest though. I want to get us promoted. If we do then I can't see why I won't sign for another three years. I want to play as high a level as I can though. I want to play in the Premier League.
We have to win our last two games of the season to have a chance of automatic promotion. Will this thought be on your mind at all during those games and do you want to be informed during matches of how Bristol City are doing? Tim Pheasant I'm sure we will find out how City are doing. There are plenty of radios around the stadium - people will let us know. How City are doing is in the back of your mind, but we have a job to do. We have to keep focused on what we need to do. If we are winning 3-0 then I might ask, but we have to concentrate on our job.
Do the fans ever get on your back? If they do, can you hear them? Keith Roger I don't know if they have ever been on my back. There are always things which wind the fans up, like if we are not playing well or if the referee is making some poor decisions. They might start moaning or groaning then. One or two of them have had a go at me before, but if anyone did have a real go at me regularly then it would really affect my game. My confidence would go. I have seen it happen to other players. As a player, you don't want that.
