Setup by the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA, the fund aims to assist local clubs whose grounds were badly affected in the June disaster which saw many parts of Yorkshire and the surrounding area plunged under water.

Last week saw Barnsley based outfit, Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, receive an equipment donation from the fund and club secretary, Charlie Wyatt, commented: “The donation is very much appreciated and helps us recover some of the equipment we lost.

Flood levels in Worsbrough Bridge reached 14ft at their peak and Wyatt added: “We are slowly rebuilding our facilities but the fund-raising for repairs goes on.”

Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Chief Executive, James Hope-Gill, described the situation that faced football in the region after the floods subsided: “A number of clubs suffered severe damage as a result of the bad weather.

“The flooding to some grounds caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage, not only to the pitches but to flood lights, changing rooms and club houses.”

“Many of these teams rely on fund raising and donations to survive and this has hit football clubs hard as they’re the heart of most communities and engage many local people through playing, supporting and social activities.

"We recognise the hardship that these clubs now find themselves in and are dedicated to helping them recover from this awful disaster."
