Gorman settling in

Our look at the new season continues with League One new boys Northampton Town.

Boss John Gorman is looking forward to an important season at The Sixfields and here is what he had to say...

What have you been up to over the summer?

"It has been a hard summer for me because I lost my wife towards the end of last season. I am glad to be back working with a new team and they are keeping me very busy."

Did you watch the World Cup?

"I watched most of the games. The Germans were the biggest surprise for me as they did very well. I was pleased for them because they played some really good football and that was a big plus for them. There were a few teams I thought could have done better such as Brazil or Argentina. Like everybody else I thought England could have done a little bit better."

How has your pre-season gone so far?

"It depends how you look at it really. We have not torn any teams apart, but then we have not played any teams that we have been able to do that to. We went to Austria and played a couple of really good German teams. We won one and lost one in injury time - so we are very pleased in that respect.

"We lost quite heavily to Reading recently, but that proved to be a very good game for us because they put out their strongest side for an hour. It is all very well picking a poor team to play and thrashing them, but what do you learn about your team. It has been good for me to get to know the boys."

What new players have you got in over the close season?

"We have got three new players at the club. Andy Holt the left back has come in from Wrexham, Sam Aiston is a wide player who was with Tranmere and of course we have got Joe Burnell, who I know quite well from Wycombe. They are already mixing well with the lads and Sam made a bit of a name for himself on Saturday by running at people with the ball."

Which players are the ones to watch at your club?

"I don't really like picking out individuals because we are a team. There are a number of very exciting players here though that I am sure will catch the eye of the crowds."

Are you looking forward to the new season?

"Everybody is the same boat at the minute because no-one really knows what is going to happen. It all depends on how you start really. You can kid yourself on that it is all going to be great - then it can all go wrong. There are a lot of big clubs in this division now. Nottingham Forest have got to start as favourites, but we are not afraid of any team."

Are there any grounds you are looking forward to visiting?

"This is a good division for grounds because most of the clubs have got really good stadiums. Forest of course, Millwall, Swansea etc. They all have good pitches and they are all exciting places to go. I am looking forward to going to Forest because Colin Calderwood left here to go there and he is a good friend of mine. We were at Tottenham together under Glenn Hoddle."

Who is your tip to win the league?

"Forest are the favourites and the pressure is all on them. It doesn't always work like that through does it?"

What are your personal ambitions for the season?

"We have just got to start off well and have the best season we can."
