While the production line of coaches straight from the bootroom is not quite in operation at Anfield anymore, there is one former player currently on the coaching staff who had has taken his first steps to the UEFA Pro Licence.

A League Champion with Liverpool in the '80s, Gary Ablett also made his name across Stanley Park by lifting The FA Cup with Everton in 1995, and now he is hoping to help Liverpool's young players make that crucial step up into the first team.

Speaking exclusively to TheFA.com, Ablett explained: "The situation I'm in as reserve team manager at Liverpool there is a great deal on this course that I can take into my work.

"I've enjoyed it and somewhere down the line I'm going to take that next step, so it will certainly help me to have these experiences. For me, it's going to be vital to taking that next step."

Ablett was extremely enthusiastic about the structure of the course, and the benefits it will have to all those who are able to take part.

"It certainly opens your eyes to different areas of coaching," Ablett admitted. "When you do your other licences the majority of it is in the field and you do some classroom work now and again.

"With this course you're learning about the psychology that goes into the different aspects of the game, the financial side the management side, and I found it very, very interesting and very beneficial.

"It works very well having so many different coaches together, you're put into groups and and you get to know people in the game better that way. From all the different aspects that I've seen here, it's going to really help me as a coach.

"From whatever level you work at, whether it's young player development to the reserve team which I'm involved in at the moment. It's about being a buffer between the players who aren't in the managers' plans, and so on and so forth. Then that goes right up to the top of the tree and being a manager in your right, having to deal with the professional players at the top of their game."

Ablett also believes that coaching has moved on from his days as a player, and will continue to do so.

"Oh very much so, I think especially in the tactical side of the game, there are all different aspects to understanding players and why they are doing certain things.

"You come away on these courses and get an insight into why it's like this, or why it's like that. It gives you an understanding as to possibly what you do with those players."
