The scheme is a unique joint venture between Whittington FC, Staffordshire FA and Lichfield District Council’s Sports Development team.

The sessions took place over five weeks during school time and were organised and run by volunteers from Whittington alongside Jamie Leaning, a specialist disability coach from the county FA.

It is the first scheme of its type in the area and will be followed by similar sessions at Queens Croft School. The club’s ultimate aim is to set up its own disabled section so that those children who want to carry on playing football have somewhere regular to go and receive qualified coaching.

Whittington is Lichfield’s only FA approved ‘Community Club’ and is recognised as one of top 200 clubs in the UK for its work with children of all abilities.

Club Chairman Steve Kirk said: "We are absolutely delighted at the response this scheme has received from the children and staff at Rocklands School and I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make these sessions possible, in particular the county FA and the various club volunteers who have given up time from work to help out. We hope to be able to offer additional sessions very soon."

At the end of the sessions the club presented each of the children with a certificate and trophy and also presented the school with a set of plastic goals for their future use.
