Hard work pays off

Surrey CFA receive special award for their equality work.

The Surrey County FA have been awarded with the Foundation Level of the National Equality Standard of Sport.

The National Equality Standard is a framework for assisting sports organisations to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport and physical activity from under representative individuals, groups and communities especially women and girls, ethnic minority groups and disabled people.

This award recognises Surrey County FA’s commitment to equality, embedded across all areas of their four year strategy which began in July 2008. The Surrey County FA’s work in the area of equality is now supported and guided by an Equality Forum, which reports directly to the County Strategy Steering Group. This group reflects their desire to gain input and representation from a wider cross-section of communities. The Equality Forum meets on a quarterly basis and has three sub groups for Race, Gender and Disability.

The credit for achieving this award lies with Oliver Selfe, Senior Football Development Officer and Les Pharo SCFA Director who compiled the application and champion equality throughout the organisation.

Ray Ward, County Secretary said “This is a great achievement for the County and demonstrates our commitment to equality across Surrey.”

Jonathan Mills, FA Equality Co-ordinator, added “This award clearly underlines Surrey County FA’s commitment to equality, and the fact that they secured the foundation level of the Standard  with flying colours adds even more weight to this level achievement.

"The FA is proud of what Surrey County FA has achieved, and we are sure they will continue to be part of the vanguard in pushing the boundaries of equality between men and women, ethnicities, disabilities and faith into the preliminary levels of the standard and beyond.”
