The mini-run has catapulted Cambridge United to third in the Conference – and that is why the U’s are TheFA.com Team of the Weekend.

But life at the non-league team was not always as good as it is now. Faced with crippling debts, the club went into administration in April and was close to going out of business.

Relegation from the football league soon followed and the future looked bleak for the Cambridgeshire team as they had to sell several players to decrease the financial outgoings and keep the club afloat.

Rob Newman was appointed manager in May to try and rebuild United with barely any resources. And top of the former Southend boss’ priority is getting his new team back into the League Two at the first time of asking.

After losing the first game of the season to Forest Green, Newman’s players responded in the best possible way by out-classing and beating promotion favourites Hereford United 2-1 at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday.

The manager described the atmosphere at the stadium as "one he has never witnessed" and begged the Cambridge faithful to keep the noise going for yesterday’s visit of Accrington Stanley who had made a 100 per cent winning start to the season themselves.

They did not let him down as United raced into an early 3-0 lead before half time and they also missed a penalty. The U’s did not add to their lead in the second half and Accrington pulled back a late consolation. But Cambridge deservedly took the spoils and moved above Accrington in the table giving their fans something to be cheerful about – at last.

"We knew Accrington were going to get a roasting and for the last ten minutes, they played with six men up front," said Newman after the match. "But they hardly had a shot on goal so it shows we defended very well.

"We have won two in a row now against two of this division’s best teams and we have to keep the momentum going. After seven games, we will have a good idea about how far we have come."
