Football legends: Brazil's Pele and England's Bobby Moore.
Who's the greatest?Friday, 10 June 2005.
Who is The World’s Greatest Sporting Legend?
Can Ian Botham be compared to Tiger Woods; Does Muhammad Ali outpoint Michael Schumacher; is Carl Lewis well ahead of the field; or who can hold court with Navratilova? Or is Pelé the greatest of them all?
Join Sir David Frost and Des Lynam to debate the heroes of a different sport each week with a studio panel of experts and live audience. David and Des team up for eight weeks in an epic and all-encompassing search for the greatest individual the world of sport has ever seen.
Each week, you can have your say by voting via The World’s Greatest Sporting Legend website: www.skyone.co.uk/sportinglegends
This week is football - who should emerge as top scorer and be crowned the definitive model of the beautiful game? Manchester United hero Bobby Charlton, Welsh wonder John Charles and England World Cup winner Bobby Moore are all in the running.
You've got until Sunday to chose your number one football legend before the result is announced.
Desmond Lynam, one of the nation’s favourite sports’ presenters over the last 25 years, has presented flagship shows Grandstand, Match of the Day and The Premiership.
Lynam said: “I’m amazed nobody has thought of this idea before. I’ve already started a row amongst my friends in the pub about who should be in it, never mind win it. David has promised I can do the ‘welcome’ after he does his ‘hello, good evening’.”
Next week looks at the greats from the sport of gentlemen - boxing. Subsequent shows showcase tennis and golf stars; Olympians including athletes, swimmers and rowers; cricket superstars through the ages; the greatest rugby players in history and the best from motorsport and horse racing.
The final is broadcast live on Sky One in a two hour special. With an advocate putting the case for each legend before a studio audience, the final promises to be a passionate and hotly contested event, leaving viewers to make the final choice.
