My recovery is going very well. I have been reaching all my targets so far. It might sound funny, but we have been doing tests to try and aggravate the injury and it seems to be responding really well. If this all continues, I hope to be back playing against Wolves at St Andrews on Sunday 25 April.

As I have already mentioned, I really can’t watch my team when I’m out injured, so in the last couple of weeks I have taken the chance to get along to some other games. Last week, I went to see England Under-18s beat their Belgian counterparts 1-0 at Northampton’s Sixfields stadium. There was a full house and a wonderful atmosphere on the night.

I really enjoyed seeing England’s next generation. Of course, they were still very raw, but you could tell there was plenty of talent out there. The goalkeeper, Tommy Heaton, who is on the books of Manchester United, looks an excellent prospect, and the scorer of the game’s only goal, a Middlesbrough midfielder by the name of James Morrison, also caught the eye.

Last Saturday, I didn’t travel down to London with the team for our game against Fulham. Instead I stayed in the Midlands and went to see a couple of old mates from my Blackburn days, James Beattie and Brett Ormerod, in action for Southampton at Wolves.

Beatts scored their first goal and looked in very good form. I really hope he can make a late push in to the England squad for Euro 2004. He is a different striker to anyone else England can call upon at the moment. He would be a great weapon to have as a substitute, coming on late in games to cause problems with his size and ability in the air. Give Beatts a chance, and he’ll always score you goals.

I was on the sofa for both the weekend’s FA Cup Semi-Finals. Of course, the Arsenal against Manchester United game was a cracker, but the Millwall and Sunderland game matched it for me. It was a thrilling game. I have to say I’m really impressed with how quickly Dennis Wise has taken to management. It can’t be easy to go straight into it from playing, but he has made it look easy so far.
