David Beckham and Alan Shearer appear in the new football film Goal!
Captains combine for Goal!
Monday, 12 September 2005.
England captain David Beckham and his Three Lions predecessor Alan Shearer are to appear on the silver screen when a new football film hits the cinemas later this month.
Becks and Shearer follow England's World Cup captain Bobby Moore, who starred alongside Pele, Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone in the 1981 film Escape to Victory.
The pair re-unite after both appearing on the cast list for the last time for England against Romania at Euro 2000.
They take cameo roles in Goal!, a movie which charts the rise of a young footballer, and also features England’s Kieron Dyer and Beckham’s Real Madrid team-mates Zinedine Zidane and Raul.
Kuno Becker stars as Santiago Munez, a skilful Mexican player who, while growing up in Los Angeles, is spotted by a Newcastle United scout and handed a trial at St James’ Park.
Thousands of miles away from home, he struggles against the wet and muddy English winter and is faced with a more physical style of play as tries to earn himself a contract with the Magpies.
Many of the scenes were shot on location in and around St James’ Park and the inclusion of genuine professional footballers add to the authenticity of the movie. Actors were trained by former Southend United striker Andy Ansah.
Goal! is released nationwide on 30 September. To find out more about the film, visit www.goalthemovie.co.uk
