Wigan went into the match as the only unbeaten team in the country, but goals from Paul Wotton and substitute Stephen Crawford, one in each half, earned Argyle a memorable away win.

The result moves promoted Plymouth up to 11th in the table and means they have lost only once in the last five games - to the delight of manager Bobby Williamson.

Other contenders this weekend included Fulham, whose astonishing 4-1 victory at Newcastle on Sunday was a major boost for boss Chris Coleman.

Lower down the leagues, Luton's 5-1 romp against Wrexham deserves a mention. And resurgent Chester held League Two promotion hopefuls Leyton Orient to a 1-1 draw to please manager Ian Rush and extend their recent run to just one defeat in 13 games.

This was also The FA Trophy first round weekend for non-league clubs and Histon deserve a mention for warming up for next Saturday's FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury by thrashing Dunstable 6-2 away from home.

Hendon's 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon, who are virtually unbeatable in league football, was also impressive, while perhaps The FA Cup's most famous giantkillers of all - Blyth Spartans - won 3-2 away at Witton Albion.
