The former England and Albion captain claimed he was distressed at having to wait three years for a top-flight job and blamed his absence from the Premiership on the rumours of a drinking culture at Middlesbrough.

Rafael Benitez has paid tribute to Anfield legend Emlyn Hughes, who died of a brain tumour yesterday aged 57.
Liverpool boss Benitez said: "He showed his love for Liverpool by playing so many games. To play 665 games for a club, many as captain, says something.

John Terry has signed a new five-year deal worth £22.5million, according to The Sun.
The Blues captain reportedly tops the club’s pay league now after almost doubling his money to £90,000-a-week.
The amazing contract is a reward for the 23-year-old England defender leading Chelsea to the top of the table.
