England’s 3-0 win over Ukraine last night dominates today’s back pages, with skipper David Beckham hailed for inspiring the side to a much-needed victory.

Beckham, who had admitted he was well below his best at Euro 2004, scored the opening goal and set up the second for Michael Owen.

Afterwards, Beckham said: “We were disappointed after Portugal and needed this. The manager needed it, the players needed it and the fans needed to see something like that. We are now in good shape for the World Cup matches.” (The Sun)

Real boss Jose Antonio Camacho has targeted the Newcastle and England star to bolster his back line and feels Woodgate has the potential to develop into the finest young defender in Europe.

Madrid sources last night confirmed the club’s senior transfer negotiator Jose Angel Sanchez , who masterminded the deals that took David Beckham and Michael Owen to the Bernabeu, was on Tyneside attempting to tie up the transfer.

Graeme Souness wants to take Alan Shearer back to Blackburn, according to The Sun.

Souness apparently made his move for the Newcastle striker following reported interest from Manchester United and Celtic.

Shearer won the Premiership with Rovers in 1995 before joining Newcastle for £15million a year later. He has vowed to retire at the end of the season and even though he is understood to be unhappy with events at St James’ Park, it appears unlikely the 34-year-old will quit the Magpies.
