Diego Forlan has begged Sir Alex Ferguson to give him one more chance at Manchester United.

The club will listen to offers for the striker, who cost £7million in January 2002.

But the Uruguayan international, who has scored 17 goals in 97 appearances, is determined not to leave.

Livepool have made Damien Duff their top target after being forced back into the transfer market, according to the Daily Mirror.

New boss Rafael Benitez has admitted he will need to sign a wide midfielder following the news that Vladimir Smicer will be out for up to six months with a cartilage injury.

Duff is reportedly the No.1 target, but first Benitez will be forced to sell at least one high-profile player to raise the funds required to tempt Chelsea to part with the Irish international.

Liverpool were in the running to sign Duff before the former Blackburn star’s £17million switch to Chelsea a year ago.

Sir Bobby Robson will seek urgent talks with Freddy Shepherd after the Newcastle chairman announced there is no possibility his manager will stay at St James’ Park beyond the end of this season.

Robson’s contract runs out at the end of the campaign and Shepherd has confirmed the 71-year-old former England manager will not be offered a new deal.

However, Robson said: "All I can tell you is that I’m unaware of anything that has been written about me or anything that has been said about me.

"Until I find out the situation, it
