Chelsea are poised to snap up Edgar Davids from under the noses of both Tottenham and Liverpool and are expected to unveil the player later today, according to the Daily Mirror.

Davids, 31, has been released by his club Juventus and Chelsea are said to have agreed a three-year deal worth an estimated £80,000 a week. The news will come as a surprise to Inter Milan, as they had talks with the player yesterday and believed that they had landed the Dutch international.

An Inter spokesman said: “We are not very happy about this situation at all.”

Marcel Desailly has decided he is too old to play for France and has announced his retirement from international football.

The 35 year-old Chelsea defender made a record 116 appearances over the last 11 years for France and won both the World cup and the European cup in that time.

“The moment when it is necessary for me to stop has arrived,” he said.

“I am not as effective as I was and I can no longer do the things that I could do in the past.” (all papers)

Fernando Hierro joined up with his former Real Madrid colleague Ivan Campo yesterday when he joined Bolton’s pre-season training camp in Italy.

It is believed that Bolton Boss Sam Allardyce has offered the Spanish legend a trial and if he impresses he will be given a one-year deal.

The former Real and Spain captain spent last season playing in Qatar, but is keen to move back to Europe for one last season. (all papers)

Wayne Rooney has spoken about his injury and what it felt like to watch his England team-mates get knocked out by Portugal in a penalty shoot-out in an exclusive interview with The Sun today.

“It was mind blowing and I was just in a daze afterwards.” Said Rooney. “Losing on penalties is the worst feeling in the world.

A powerful second-half header from Werder Bremen striker Angelos Charisteas was enough to crown the Greeks as the new kings of Europe.

This was second time in the Championships that Greece beat the home nation as they ran out 2-1 winners in the opening game of the tournament. (all papers)
