A jubilant Chester City lift the Conference title.
City are back
By Andy Hawkins. Sunday, 18 April 2004.
Chester City are this week's TheFA.com Team of the Weekend after Mark Wright's side won promotion back to the Nationwide League on Saturday.
Darryn Stamp's 19th-minute winner against Scarborough ended a four-year spell in non-League football and sparked wild celebrations at the Deva Stadium.
The three points saw Chester crowned champions for the first time since they won the Cheshire League in 1926/27.
It has been a remarkable turnaround for The Blues after they nearly went out of business in 1999.
The club were relegated the next summer, following a 69-year spell in the Football League, and the situation appeared bleak.
Liverpool businessman Stephen Vaughan bought Chester in 2001 as they struggled near the foot of the Conference and appointed ex-England centre-back Mark Wright as manager.
And the Italia '90 hero has since worked wonders. Last year Chester made significant progress only to go out to Doncaster Rovers on penalties in the play-off semi-final.
This campaign the club have amassed 92 points with one game still to go. Daryl Clare has led the way with 30 goals, while Stamp has netted 20 times.
The defence has also been rock-solid, conceding just 32 goals all season.
Other contenders for Team of the Week included Portsmouth for their terrific win over Man United, and Norwich, who seem certain of promotion to the Premiership after thrashing Walsall 5-0 at Carow Road.
Derby County, who won 5-1 against Preston to ease their relegation fears, also deserve mention.
