(Villarreal win 4-2 on aggregate)
It was a mixed night for English sides in the UEFA Champions League last night as Manchester United confirmed their place in the group stage but Everton were knocked out by Villarreal.
Having won the first leg at Old Trafford 3-0, Sir Alex Ferguson's side eased
into today's draw with a 6-0 aggregate win over Debrecen.
Gabriel Heinze's first-half header header settled United down after the Hungarian champions had started brightly with Zsombor Kerekes and Tamas Sandor going close.
Heinze scored another header and substitute Kieran Richardson made it 3-0 with a powerful 20-yard strike.
The England international then limped off with 20 minutes left and United, who had used all their substitutes, finished with ten men.
Meanwhile in Spain, Everton knew they had their work cut out to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg at Goodison Park against Villarreal.
In a first half dominated by the home side, Juan Pablo Sorin's deflected shot gave the Spanish side a two goal aggregate advantage.
Gradually Everton came back in to the match and on 69 minutes, Mikel Arteta curled home a delightful free-kick to give the Toffees a chance.
Moments later referee Pierluigi Collina ruled out a Duncan Ferguson header that would have taken the game to extra time.
As Everton pushed forward looking for a goal there was always a danger Villarreal could counter and they did exactly that when Diego Forlan's injury-time winner sent the Toffees into the UEFA Cup.
