Celta Vigo 2-3 Arsenal

Arsenal recorded a superb 3-2 away win in Vigo - their first Champions League win in Spain in seven attempts - thanks to a double strike from Brazilian midfielder Edu. He scored after eighteen minutes when he bundled home a scappy goal but Arsenal were soon on the back foot as the home side came forward.

With Alexandr Mostovoi playing wonderfully well, Celta equalised when Edu - a case of much Edu about something - headed home Silvinho's free kick from the left.

Arsenal are a potent attacking forcve this year and they retook the lead when Edu -again - curled home a brilliant goal. After dribbling past three Celta defenders, the 25-year-old cut inside and whipped home a curling effort with his weaker right foot.

After Jose Ignacio equalised on 64 minutes the game seemed to be heading for a draw but then Arsenal's talismanic duo, Thierry Henry and Robert Pires, combined to lethal effect. They exchanged a brilliant double one-two to allow Pires just enough time and space in the box to finish calmly past a stranded Cavallero.

Bayern Munich 1-1 Real Madrid

An mistake seven minutes from time from Bayern Munich's Oliver Kahn gave Spanish champions Real Madrid a rather fortunate draw in the Champions League second round, first leg.

Roberto Carlos's innocuous free-kick somehow found its way under Kahn's body to give Real the upper hand as the tie moves to the Santiago Bernebeu for the second leg.

The draw was hardly deserved for the visitors as Bayern dominated the speed of the game and would have scored much earlier in the match were it not for the excellence of Iker Casillas in goal.

Eventually Bayern did break through when Roy Makaay headed home Pizarro's accurate cross with fourteen minutes left. That looked to be the decisive strike but then, just seven minutes later, Real equalised by way of Kahn's error of judgement.

Sparta Prague 0-0 AC Milan

AC Milan will be favourites to qualify for the quarter-finals as they dew 0-0 away to tough-tackling Sparta Prague.

Amid freezing conditions the European champions and Serie A leaders were always in control of the match and really they should have come away from the Czech capital with a win.

Profligacy from their big-name strikers cost them though as Filippo Inzaghi and Andrei Shevchenko both failed to make the most of some good chances.

Sparta's defence were rather over-reliant on Jaromir Blazek in goal whilst in attack the home side's best efforts came from some rather hopeful long-range efforts.

Seven minutes after half-time the ball did get past one of the keepers when Igor Gluscevic scored but he was flagged for offside.

Lokomotiv Moscow 2-1 Monaco

Lokomotiv Moscow will be rueing a late Monaco goal as after an hour of their match against the French side they looked to have positioned themselves perfectly for the second leg.

Marat Izmailov netted a well-taken opening goal when he weaved his way past two Monaco defenders before beating Flavio Roma with a powerful shot.

Lokomotiv, who denied Internazionale a place in the last 16, found themselves in dreamland on 59 minutes when Vladimir Maminov added a second when he found some room in the penalty area to finish coolly past Roma.

However ten minutes later on-loan striker Fernando Morientes gave his side real hope of qualifying for the last eight when he headed Jerome Rothen's cross past the Russian 'keeper.
