Scott Carson, the Liverpool 'keeper who spent last season on loan at Charlton, became England's most-capped U21 player during this month's UEFA Championship Finals in Holland.

He featured in all four matches as Stuart Pearce's England side reached the last four for the first time since 1988 and now has 29 caps at U21 level. Newcastle United midfielder James Milner, another ever-present in Holland, is now up to 28 caps - and he will still be eligible next season!

Before this month the U21 caps record had been held jointly by Jamie Carragher and Gareth Barry. Carragher made his 27th and last appearance against Slovakia in Bratislava in 2000, England going down 2-0 to the UEFA Championship Finals hosts.

Barry equalled Carragher's record in his last appearance in 2003, England losing 2-1 in a UEFA Championship qualifier against Portugal at Goodison Park.

Here are the ten most-capped players:-
  • Scott Carson - 29
  • James Milner - 28
  • Gareth Barry and Jamie Carragher - 27
  • David Prutton - 25
  • Jermaine Pennant - 24
  • Jermain Defoe and Nigel Reo-Coker - 23
  • Gary Owen - 22
  • Shola Ameobi and David Dunn - 20

England have been playing U21 fixtures since 1976. We were European Champions in 1982 and 1984.
