Originally constructed to stage the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the City of Manchester Stadium has been home to Manchester City FC since August 2003, when the club vacated Maine Road.

To make the stadium more suitable for staging football, the athletics track was removed and the pitch lowered to enable a lower tier to be added. The old lower tier was also extended.

The alterations to the construction added an extra ten thousand seats, taking the capacity to 48,000.

The stadium is the site of the tallest sculpture in the UK - known as ‘B of the Bang’ - which was built to commemorate the 2002 Commonwealth games.

The City of Manchester Stadium also houses the widest pitch in English football.

Located in North East Manchester, the stadium is a 20 minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly train station.

Those travelling by road should follow the brown Sportcity signs.

Manchester is behind only London and Glasgow in the league table of tourist visitors and there are plenty of attractions to visit. For those interested in history, the Imperial War Museum and the Manchester Museum are well worth visiting.

The Imperial War Museum, which is at The Quays in Trafford Park, focuses on how war shapes lives. Manchester Museum has galleries dedicated to Archaeology, Archery, Botany, Egyptology, Ethnology, Geology, Numismatics, Oriental Studies and Zoology.

The Trafford Centre is another popular place, boasting 280 stores and 38 restaurants under one roof.

On a sporting theme, there are daily guided tours of Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium.

Greater Manchester has a population of 2.5m. The population is multi-cultural and predominantly young, with 65 per cent being under the age of 45.

Manchester's time at the heart of the industrial revolution is reflected in the number of grand gothic buildings in the city centre.
