Scholes was replaced by Owen Hargreaves with 14 minutes remaining in Sunday's 2-1 defeat by France after twisting an ankle.

England Head Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed that the Manchester United midfielder may not be fit in time for the game in Coimbra.

"Paul Scholes is a doubt for Thursday. He has an ankle injury. He will not practice today and maybe not tomorrow," he said.

Other than Scholes' injury, his Manchester United team-mate Gary Neville took a knock but Eriksson insists it is minor.

"Gary Neville has some small problem. If he can't practice Tuesday, I should think he will at least on Wednesday,'' revealed the Coach.

He also praised the contribution of defender Ledley King, who gave an outstanding display on his first competitive appearance.

"King was absolutely fantastic. I don't remember any mistake at all, he was quick, strong, made some good headers, so congratulations to him, he did well."

Eriksson would not be drawn on whether King would start against Switzerland ahead of John Terry, who is expected to be fit after missing the France game with a hamstring injury.

"It is good to have these problems. Terry should be ready and will do everything with us this afternoon.''
