Milan Baros scores against Denmark in the quarter-finals.
Thursday, 01 July 2004.
As Greece's UEFA EURO 2004™ odyssey goes on, they can think back to their only competitive meeting with the former Czechoslovakia.
First goal
It came in the second game of EURO '80, and Greece fell to defeat in Rome, losing any chance of progressing from the group stage. But Nikolaos Anastopoulos's equaliser 14 minutes into the 3-1 defeat was Greece's only goal in a major final tournament - until the opening match in Portugal this time around.
Previous draw
Czechoslovakia in fact won all five of their meetings with Greece. But since the formation of the separate Czech Republic team, their only fixture has been a 0-0 friendly draw in Ioannina in April 2002. Neither side were competing at the FIFA World Cup finals, but have come a long way since.
Porto pressure
The Czechs indeed can stay on course to become the first side to register six finals victories in a single UEFA European Championship with a win. Both sides though have a happy record at the Estádio do Dragão - Greece beat Portugal in the opening game here, while on Sunday the Czechs saw off Denmark 3-0 in the quarter-finals.
