Having been beaten by two strikes from Zinedine Zidane in stoppage time on Sunday, David knows that victory over the Swiss is vital and the players are ready to go for it.

He said: "We feel very united as a squad. It's about winning now, whichever way possible.

"We played well against France but we lost, so if we play rubbish on Thursday and get the victory then we will be happy.

"After the France game the changing room was a very glum place as you can imagine. Obviously the evening wasn't a good one, but after people had time to collect their thoughts there was a much more positive mood in the camp.

"It was great up until 91 minutes, and on looking at the video everything was going well. Give credit to Zidane though, he showed why he's been the best player in the world and that he's still very much up there."

And David admitted that although he tried to do his homework on the French, there was not a lot he could do on the night.

"I had been practising penalties and watched videos and everything. But it was a very good penalty from Zidane.

"The free-kick was not bad, but personally I think there were things I could have done better.

But David and his team-mates are now looking forward rather than back.

"The focus is now winning the game on Thursday. I enjoyed the France match but I like winning and a win on Thursday and then in the final group game and then we'll be happy."

He also had a special word about the incredible support from England’s fans in the Stadium of Light. "I went out on the pitch before the game and it was a buzz with all the fans there.

"The fans were superb and watching the video afterwards I felt gutted for them. The performance has got to be heartening for them and hopefully they are as positive as we are.

"If we get two wins we are through the group stages and we can concentrate on the knock-out stages. There is a long way to go yet. We have to be confident and make sure we get through"
