Michael Owen grabbed a late equalizer against the world and European champions to give England their just reward for a spirited display in the Stade de France.

Kevin Keegan's re-shaped side had matched France for an hour, creating a series of chances, before falling behind to an Emmanuel Petit goal.

The home side then turned on the style, making it difficult for England to gain possession and creating a number of chances to put the game beyond reach.

But Owen came off to the bench to sweep home a cross from another substitute Kieron Dyer in the 86th minute, capping an encouraging performance from England.

It was a night of celebration for the French, giving a send-off to their retiring captain Didier Deschamps and defensive stalwart Laurent Blanc, but England had their own reasons to be cheerful.

Andrew Cole, in a new lone role up front, created a number of chances, Darren Anderton made a useful return to the international stage, and Gareth Barry impressed on his full debut.
