Brent Hills has named his England Women’s U23 squad for an FA-hosted mini-tournament which welcomes USA, Sweden and Norway to these shores at the beginning of July.
Hills has named an experienced group of 17 players, seven of which have tasted the delights of the England senior team in the past (indeed, defenders Sophie Bradley and Claire Rafferty have been included in Hope Powell’s squad of 22 for this Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Spain), underlining his intentions ahead of this round-robin competition, which is being staged in place of the hitherto annual Nordic Cup.
The U23s’ last outing, in February, took them to La Manga for another four-team tournament where a Danielle Bird goal gave England a 1-0 victory over Norway before illness and injury cost Hills’ charges dear as they lost 1-0 to USA in the final game.
Spectators are welcome at any of the matches in this tournament. Tickets are not necessary, simply turn up and enjoy the action.
